Calvin Flax played in The First Tee Pebble Beach Open with Peter Jacobsen.

Calvin had an amazing time participating in this great tournament.  In addition to playing two 18-hole rounds of golf with Peter Jacobsen at Pebble Beach.  He also played a practice round of golf with Greg Norman, ate dinner at a table with Peter Jacobsen, Hal Irwin and their wives.

Calvin described the event as surreal.  He talked about a moment where he was warming up for his round with Tom Watson on one side of him and Bill Murray on the other.  It was an experience he will remember for the rest of his life.  Bill was nice enough to give Calvin's Aunt a call just to say "hi".

This is one of the many opportunities available through our The First Tee program for participants.

Melissa Merrigan, a participant of The First Tee Program at The Children’s Course has been selected as one of five semifinalists for The First Tee Coca-Cola America’s Future Award.  The five semi-finalists will be interviewed by Coca-Cola executives during a visit to their corporate headquarters in Midtown Atlanta August 18-20.  This interview along with the participant’s application will be used to determine the winner of a one-time $5,000 scholarship and a three day trip to the TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola in Atlanta on September 24-26, 2009.  The four semi-finalists will each receive a $1,000 one-time scholarship.

Melissa has been a participant of The First Tee Program at The Children’s Course for six years.  This fall she will be entering her senior year at LaSalle Catholic College Prepatory School.  Melissa is a determined young woman that perseveres to accomplish her goals both on and off the golf course.  That might explain the hole in one she got at one of our golf tournaments.  She is an excellent student. This is evident in the 4.0 GPA she has carried since she began receiving letter grades.

The Children’s Course in a non-profit youth development organization that is part of a national organization called The First Tee.  Our mission is to impact the lives of youth by providing learning facilities and educational programs that provide life-enhancing values through the game of golf.  The Children’s Course provides golf and life skills to more than 3,500 youth annually.

April 5th, 2009

The Children's Course hosted it's 5th Annual Wine & Golf Ball "Fore" The Children's Course, on Friday April 3rd, 2009 at the Oregon Golf Club.  The event was a big success, netting more than $58,000 to support our outreach programs for children!

The night was full of fun!  It included wine-tasting, hors d'oeuvres, a silent and live auction, and exciting games and prizes!  Eight renowned Oregon and Washington wines were featured in the tasting, and live music was performed by The Dan Balmer trio.

The Benefit:

The Children's Course serves disadvantaged and at-risk youth, special needs children and all young people that can benefit from our curriculum. Children learn invaluable life skills which allow them to be successful both on and off the golf course.  In 2008, The Children's Course provided more than 14,000 golf and life skills lessons to more than 3,500 youth.  We partner with nearly 80 schools and charitable organizations in the greater Portland area.
